The new NFL home for LB Dansby is Dolphins

After long-time guessing, former Arizona Cardinals linebacker Karlos Dansby made his final decision about his new team on the first day of free agency. The team he chose was the Miami Dolphins, who signed with him a $43 million, five-year contract on Friday.

The contract includes $22 million guaranteed and will pay Dansby $27 million over the next three years. On the same day of obtaining the big prize from this year’s free agent market, the Dolphins terminated the contracts of two linebackers and a safety: outside linebacker Joey Porter, inside linebacker Akin Ayodele and free safety Gilbril Wilson.

Dansby has started since his first year of wearing NFL jerseys after being drafted by the Cardinals as a second-round pick in 2004. The most impressive of his plays happened in the playoffs of last season. He returned Aaron Rodgers’ fumble 17 yards for a touchdown that sealed the Cardinals’ 51-45 victory over the Green Bay Packers. The Dolphins bring him in with the hope that he will help improve a defense that gave up a franchise-record 140 points in the fourth quarter last year.

Extension Unlikely For Dansby

Cardinals general manager Rod Graves acknowledged Friday that the chance a new deal is reached recently is unlikely, as the deadline to get franchised linebacker Karlos Dansby a contract extension comes in just a few days.

“We still hope to reach an agreement on a long-term deal with Karlos,” Graves said. “But there is a considerable gap in our positions.”

Graves did not want to give details about Cardinals’ offer or Dansby’s contract desire, and Dansby did not give any comment yet. But the notion Dansby probably won’t sign a new deal is not a surprise, after his strong hints earlier this offseason he wanted a chance to reach the unrestricted free agent market in 2010. He may choose some one who used to wear denver broncos jersey.

The deadline to sign a franchised player is Wednesday. Dansby is already under contract for 2009 for a guaranteed salary of almost $9.7 million, but if no deal gets in place by July 15, Dansby will not be able to sign a long-term contract with the Cards before the regular season ends.
